Making Plants Winter-Ready

Which Winter Protection is Best for Your Plants?

As the cold season approaches, it’s crucial to shield your plants from frost and freezing temperatures. However, not all plants require the same type of winter protection. Discover the ideal solutions for different plant types and learn how to keep your garden thriving with the right materials!

POTTET PLANTS

Mediterranean plants like oleanders, citrus trees, and figs, often grown in containers, are particularly vulnerable to cold. Their roots in pots are more exposed to frost, and delicate young shoots or leaves need extra care during winter.

ROSES

Roses are a garden favorite, delighting us with vibrant blooms in summer and fall. However, during winter, they need extra care to protect their sensitive roots and grafting points.

TIP: Use our rose protection sleeve or insulating coconut fibre plant protection mat and protect delicate root areas during the colder months.

XL-PLANTS

Large plants, such as tall palms, young or sensitive trees, and sprawling shrubs, need specialized protection in winter. Their size and structure make them particularly susceptible to frost damage.

everything you need to know about winter plant protection

When is the right time to prepare my plants for winter?

The ideal time to apply winter protection depends on the type of plant. Generally, it should be done when temperatures consistently drop below 5°C or frost is forecast. In many regions, this is typically in late autumn or early winter, often around November.

How often should I water my plants in winter to prevent frost damage?

Plants still need adequate water during winter and should be watered regularly. It’s best to water on mild days when temperatures are above 0°C to provide moisture without risking freezing.

Should I fertilize my plants in winter, or wait until spring?

Give your plants a final dose of organic fertilizer in autumn. Mineral fertilizers, however, should be applied in summer. Fertilizing too late in the year can stimulate new growth, which is particularly vulnerable to frost damage during winter.

When should I remove winter protection from my plants?

Winter protection can be removed once temperatures consistently rise above 10°C, usually from March onward. This allows plants to adjust naturally to the changing season.
